Indigo Shibori: A Perfect Union (5 Days)

Student Supply List

 

 

Fabric
 5 yds of washed, untreated, white 100% cotton or other cellulose fabric.  PFD “prepared for dyeing” fabric is not required but guarantees best results.

If you wish to experiment further, bring small amounts of:
-  undyed plant based cloth (eg. linen, hemp) or silk
-  cottons solid dyed in various colors, not too dark so indigo will show

 

Other Materials
Thread: Button & Carpet (stronger than regular sewing thread)
Sewing needles (large enough for  button & carpet thread), thimble if you use one
Twine (eg. Kite string) or crochet thread (medium to heavy weight)
Waxed dental floss (any flavor)
Embroidery sized scissors with pointed blades (not your best) or thread snips
Seam ripper (optional)

 

A soft pencil
12 inch or larger ruler (see-thru is nicest)
Masking tape
A few rubber bands (especially small ones) (optional)
A few pebbles, beans or marbles
Clothespins-two dozen or so (plastic or wooden, the hinged type)
Large paper clips (optional)
A couple of wine corks or pink pearl erasers

 

Clamps (eg. c-clamps, large bull dog clamps, or chip bag clamps)
Pairs of objects to clamp (eg.jar lids, chopsticks, wooden or rigid plastic shapes)
Optional) A notebook or sketchbook for notes, samples

 

A small spray bottle
A 1-quart plastic container (eg. Yogurt)
A 1 to 2 gallon bucket for rinsing
A box of gallon baggies (for shibori and  to take home damp dyed fabric)
A lidded container  (eg. milk jug, quart jars, etc.) to possibly take some indigo home (optional)

 

A trash bag
Old towels
A roll of paper towels
Rubber Gloves (a la Playtex)
Surgical Weight Rubber Gloves ( a couple of pairs)
Students should wear old clothes.

 

A PVC pipe, 24 inches long (maximum) and 1 ½ to 3 inches in diameter. If leftover from plumbing project, outside surface must be smooth and non-perforated.
